About CASA

The Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) is a government body that regulates aviation safety in Australia.

We license pilots, register aircraft, oversee aviation safety and promote safety awareness. We also make sure that the aviation community and the public use and administer Australian airspace safely.

In July 1995, we were established as an independent statutory authority. We operate within a legislative framework made up of acts, regulations, associated legislative instruments and guidance material.

The Division

National Operations and Standards Division is responsible for the development and maintenance of the civil aviation safety regulatory scheme, associated guidance and supporting materials.  This includes the consideration of policy initiatives and engaging with stakeholders on international standards and recommended practices and their associated documents. The range of responsibilities includes personnel licensing, flight operations, airworthiness, air navigation, airspace, aerodromes, and remotely piloted aircraft systems. The Division is also responsible for provision of regulatory services and surveillance, including aircraft certification and production, simulator certification, air navigation services and airspace.

The Aviation Safety Inspector (ANS) is part of a small team in the CNS/ATM Section that is part of the Air Navigation, Airspace and Aerodromes Branch. This Branch conducts frontline activities for CASA including entry control, ongoing surveillance and where required enforcement of air traffic control training and service providers, aeronautical telecommunications, communications, navigation and surveillance services, aerodrome rescue and firefighting services, instrument approach designers and aeronautical information management. The Branch also exercise CASA's authority for the regulation of Australian-administered airspace and provides relevant advice to Government, ICAO fora, industry and internally.

The Aviation Safety Inspector works under general direction and demonstrates and exercises both initiative and judgment in the provision of highly developed technical knowledge and expertise in complex, or unusual matters where existing standards, policies and procedures may not cover the circumstances. This role requires a highly developed regulatory knowledge to undertake work of a challenging or complex nature and may include undertaking detailed or sensitive projects that have broader impacts for CASA and the broader Aviation Industry.
